Why we should have fine arts in school

This is an article I wrote for school , my English teacher basically disagreed lol becuase he believes there arent much talented ‘artist’ in order to actually implement fine arts, but I truly appreciate art and believe it should be something that we should embrace more especially in a tiny country like Belize.

How do you express yourself? Perhaps it’s the way you dress or the color of your hair or your taste in music. Well for many students a way of expressing themselves is through a fine art such as drawing, painting, and singing, playing an instrument or dancing. Many students don’t have the opportunity to do this out of school so during school is their only option. This fact and many others make me strongly believe that fine arts should be funded in schools from primary schools and up. Why do fine arts matter and what makes them worth time and money spent? Fine arts consist of so much more than just painting and drawing. Fine arts include visual arts, dance, choir, band and orchestra, design and theater. This is sometimes misunderstood and taken for granted. These programs help students perform better and learn at a higher level. Students also gain more scholarship opportunities and get noticed in the community. Fine arts do not only help students but also teachers.Study of art has proven to help students succeed in school and socially. A group of boys, ages 8 to 19, living in residential homes and juvenile detention centers for at-risk youth, discovered that learning to play guitar and performing for their peers boosted their confidence and self-esteem. The research suggests the opportunity to perform may be a powerful tool to help youth overcome fears and see that they can succeed (Study of the art, 2006). No matter where you come from fine arts can help you succeed and perform better. Because of all the research that have been conducted, we can see that fine arts help improve many skills. In an experimental research study of high school age students, those who studied dance scored higher than non-dancers on measures of creative thinking, especially in the categories of fluency, originality and abstract thought. Whether dancers can use their original abstract thinking skills in other disciplines is an important area of exploration (the study of the art, 2006). Skills such as dramatic elements can help stories be understood better in class and music can help with memorization.

Did you know that young people who participate in the arts for at least 3 hours, 3 days a week for a year are more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, likely to be elected to be a class officer and are way more likely to participate in school activities? Students who participate in fine arts have more opportunities to be recognized in the community and therefore have more chances of gaining scholarships and attending prestigious schools. Participating in fine arts often improves the achievements of students in other realms of learning in life. Belize is a small country with a population of about 375,000 people. Out of this amount of people only a small percentage are enrolled in school. There are not many opportunities and even those who have graduated find it difficult to get a job. If fine arts would be a part of the curriculum then more jobs and careers would be introduced to Belize. Many students are talented and have the skills necessary but just need to find it in themselves and master those skills. A student with such skills would be highly recognized and rewarded in our community. If fine arts are never introduced, then there will continue to be many graduates with the same degrees in the same fields with no jobs.

Concepts of fine art can be weaved into everyday teaching to make the lesson plans better not only that but to introduce a culture of excellence. Teaching jobs are also provided in the fine arts sector. Fine art programs do not only benefit the students enrolled in them, but they also help the teachers teaching the classes simply by giving them a job and an income each month. Not all schools are academically excellent so having good fine arts programs gives the school a chance to be widely recognized for either Theater, dance etc. Similarly, it can give teachers other personnel, a sense of pride for the place of employment. Being able to teach a fine art is prestigious. Therefore, the teacher will be highly recognized in the community as an excellent teacher with skills other than just academic skills. Being able to teach students a fine art will also help improve the relationship between the teacher and the students since they will have to work together as a team and build trust within the groups.

All in all, fine art is of great importance to any society and needs to be cultivated in schools. Many people believe that fine art is simply painting or sketching. It is seen as something very boring and unnecessary when in reality it can change and improve Belize greatly. The youth is the future, as cheesy as that sounds it is the truth. Many Belizeans are talented but are limited when it comes to choosing a field of study. If they were able to make use of their talents they could improve Belize. At times, a school can be very monotonous and boring but if there is something different and it just happens to be something you love then there will be a reason to want to attend school. By practicing an art such as dancing or singing the student will eventually become better in academics. This will lead to success in school since they will learn how to tackle their work better, and they will be able to embrace new skills.  By performing well they will stand out in the community and this will lead to more opportunities such as attending prestigious schools and receiving scholarships. Teachers who teach fine arts also benefit from it as they also become recognized and along the way also gain many valuable skills.
